Bob was on a long cross-country trip in December, traversing through the scenic but chilly backroads of Arkansas. The route was dotted with small towns, each one brimming with its own unique charm. As his car's gas gauge dipped towards empty, Bob spotted a quaint little gas station with an attached convenience store and decided it was time to stop.
He pulled into the station, parked by one of the old-fashioned gas pumps, and stepped out into the brisk winter air. The store had gone all-out for the holiday season, adorning its windows with colorful lights and festive decorations. Near the entrance, a meticulously crafted nativity scene caught Bob's eye. It was a classic display featuring Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, shepherds, and, of course, the three wise men. But something peculiar stood out: the three wise men were all wearing firemen's hats.
Bob chuckled to himself, finding the sight both amusing and puzzling. He decided he had to find out the story behind this unusual choice of headgear. After filling up his tank, he walked into the convenience store to pay for his gas. The warmth inside was a stark contrast to the cold outside, and the smell of fresh coffee and baked goods filled the air.
Behind the counter stood a middle-aged clerk with a friendly but somewhat weary expression. Bob approached him with a smile and handed over some cash for the fuel.
"Nice nativity scene you got out there," Bob remarked casually. "But I couldn't help but notice—the wise men are wearing firemen's hats. What's that all about?"
The clerk's face immediately darkened, and he let out an exasperated sigh. "You Northerners," he muttered, shaking his head. "Always pokin' fun at our nativity scene. I'm gettin' mighty tired of it."
Bob was taken aback by the clerk's sudden change in demeanor. "Oh no, I didn't mean any offense," he quickly clarified. "I'm just curious, that's all."
The clerk narrowed his eyes but then seemed to soften a bit. "Alright then," he said, reaching under the counter and pulling out a well-worn Bible. "I'll show ya."
He flipped through the pages with practiced ease until he found what he was looking for. He jabbed his finger at a particular verse and looked up at Bob with a triumphant grin.
"See here? It says right here in the Good Book: 'The three wise men came from afar.' Now tell me, how could they come from afar if they weren't firemen?"
